Special guests Morgan Simon, Founding Partner at the Candide Group, and Daryn Dodson, Founder and Managing Director at Illumen Capital, will discuss why and how to invest for racial equity.
Morgan, who advises family offices on their impact investments with a focus on social justice and sustainability, will give an overview of the investment landscape discussing a range of investments from market rate to lower return higher impact alternatives. Daryn, whose Illumen Capital manages a fund of funds, will discuss how Illumen’s approach to training their asset managers on implicit bias unlocks superior returns. Both Daryn and Morgan are at the forefront of using capital as a tool for advancing social justice, with decades of investment management experience.
This initial session will provide an overview of investing for racial equity across a variety of asset classes such as public market investments, private equities, debt/loan funds, and real estate. Based on SV2 Partner interest, follow-on sessions may be offered that go deeper into specific types of investment opportunities.

About Daryn Dodson
Daryn Dodson, Founder and Managing Director at Illumen Capital, is a passionate advocate of social and economic justice, especially for disadvantaged and marginalized groups. His work with impact investors, private equity funds, Fortune 100 companies, universities and foundations has been viewed through the lens of addressing the world’s most pressing social and environmental problems.
Daryn previously led the Special Equities Program as a consultant to the Board of the Calvert Funds, a $12 billion pioneer of the impact investing field. Through this vehicle, Calvert maintains a portfolio of more than 40 funds on five continents, representing over 350 underlying portfolio companies. Prior to serving as a consultant to Calvert, Daryn served as Director of University and Corporate Partnership for The Idea Village, where he created a platform engaging leading private equity firms, business schools, and Fortune 500 companies to invest over 100,000 hours and $2 million into more than 1,000 New Orleans entrepreneurs post-Hurricane Katrina.
Mr. Dodson currently serves on the Board of Directors for Ben and Jerry’s. He earned his M.B.A. from Stanford, where he serves on the Dean’s Management Board, and his A.B. from Duke University.
About Morgan Simon
Morgan Simon, Founding Partner at Candide Group, has close to two decades of experience making finance a tool for social justice. In that time she has influenced over $150B and is a regularly sought out expert on impact investing. Her first book, Real Impact: The New Economics of Social Change has been featured everywhere from Harvard Business School to the United Nations.
A serial social entrepreneur, prior to Candide Group she was the founding CEO of Toniic, a global impact investment network, co-founder of Transform Finance, a non-profit organization building a bridge between finance and social justice, and also founding ED of the Responsible Endowments Coalition, educating and organizing over 100 campuses across the country.
She received a B.A with High Honors in Economics and Political Science from Swarthmore College, and serves as an Adjunct Professor in the Graduate Program at Middlebury College. More on Morgan at www.morgansimon.com.
